PHARMACOLOGIC ACTIONS
Curcuma longa (Turmeric) is a medicinal plant with hepatoprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Commission E approved this herb for dyspepsia (fullness and flatulence) and loss of appetite. Curcumin(the active ingredient of turmeric is responsible for yellow color of this powder)has free radical scavenging activities.
Curcumin provides an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the binding of transcription factor AP-1 to DNA and activation of NF – Kappa B.
Curcumin inhibits epidermal arachidonic acid metabolism by means of lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways and reduces the inflammatory effects of arachidonic acid and tetradeconylphorbol-acetate. Turmeric has anti hepatotoxic, antihyperlipidemic, antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects.
A research shows that a daily intake of turmeric equivalent to 20mg of the antioxidant Curcumin for 60 days, decreases the high levels of peroxidation of both the HDL and the LDL, so Curcumin because of its antioxidant activity and lack of toxicity, might be a useful complement to standard hypo-lipidemic drugs in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. Another study indicates that dietary turmeric is an effective anti-mutagen and it may be useful in chemoprevention.
